Welcome Everyone!
Walking into CAS 137H at the beginning of my freshman year of college, I had absolutely no idea what to expect other then the class was about ‘Rhetoric and Civic Life.” Two concepts that I had never come across throughout my entire high school career, needless to say, I knew I would take some sort of knowledge out of this class.
I soon came to learn incredible amounts. I learned that rhetoric is defined as, “the art of effective persuasive speaking or writing.” With that definition, I became aware that politicians tend to use incredible amounts of rhetoric to sway their audience to vote for them.
Along with what exactly rhetoric was, I also was introduced to the terms, ethos, pathos and logos. Terms that I eventually came across in my photography class. These too are three words that I had never heard before this course, and I now have a solid understanding that ethos are the ethical appeal, logos are the logical appeal, and pathos are the emotional appeal that a certain piece provokes.
I believe this class really helped extend my writing knowledge because I now know what to add and what not to add in my writing. I know that when I am writing a piece that should provoke emotion that there should be many different pathos within the piece. I now know that with an assignment such as a persuasive essay, you should incorporate ethical, logical, and also emotional appeals to persuade your audience to think a certain way.
However, this course didn’t only teach the class about rhetoric, but we were also shown different ways to portray our projects, such as podcasts and videos. I had never produced a podcast before CAS 138T, and I had no idea how to use GarageBand, but because of this class I learned a great amount of knowledge regarding technology, writing, and speaking.
In the end, I feel as if I am well prepared to not only write papers and use different types of media, but I am also equipped with being an effective speaker, deliberator, and also moderator of any conversation…all because of this course.
